Rhetorical Exam

The author of this piece is David Papineau. This author credible due to him being a British philosopher and professor at Kings College in London. He was written “Knowing the score: How sports teach us about philosophy”. He is author of many metaphysics and philosophy books. He has a lot of experience in the field. The author’s audience for this article are football( soccer fans), political leaders and general public that is interested in why players are flopping. I know this because the article is mostly speaking about football but also brings up the policy of Qatar, while answering the question about flopping. The tone of this piece transitioned throughout. Towards the beginning the tone is understanding and preaching not to judge a book by its cover. For instance the text states “But maybe this is just a parochial reaction to unfamiliar conduct. After all, people arrange their differently in different parts of the world. We should take care not to conflate the strange with the immoral.” The tone then moves into saying that even thou things are tradition, it doesn’t make it right. The text mentions” Many modern societies still uphold immoral customs. Qatar outlaws homosexuality and lack basic worker rights. These might be longstanding elements in Qatari social structure, but that doesn’t make them right.” The purpose of the piece is to inform the world of the practice of flopping while also calling out traditions that are immoral. I know this is the purpose because the text speaks of flopping and traditions but also mentions that tradition are not protected from the critique of being immoral. The genre is an semi-formal article that breaches political aspects while allows the reader to question that if traditions are longstanding are invincible of being immoral. I know this because he answers his questions and provides some evidence towards it while also making the point some traditions being immoral. The medium used to communicate is paper, the other form of communicating is the article in the New York times on paper but also on online. The related things that were happening in the world at the time were the 2022 world cup almost starting and the host Qatar are saying that no LGBTQ flags or physical representation are allowed in the world cup. The timing of the piece is most likely a couple days after the announcement, so this article can be a response to that while also educating people about the world cup. The cultural expectations for where it was published is for the article to condemn how Qatar’s tradition violates human rights. I know this because the piece was published in America and America is one of many countries that are very outspoken about human rights. The author’s stance appears to be that while you cannot judge traditions due to your inexperience doesn’t mean that these tradition’s can not be called wrong. It states ” And perhaps the worldwide attention surrounding the world cup will lead the Qatari authorities to recognize that they, too, degrade themselves by their outdated laws.” The author recognizes different traditions yet also calls them out for being wrong.
